One of the fastest-growing cuisines in Santiago. Areperas and fast-food spots set up downtown and in the student neighborhoods, and today they're spread across the whole city.
Venezuelan migration is the largest Chile has received in its recent history: it grew strongly from 2015 and made Venezuelans the most numerous foreign community in the country. With them came the areperas, first as small places downtown and in the university neighborhoods, then as chains and stalls at street markets and food courts.
Today the arepa competes with the completo as Santiago's fast food, and the tequeño has become the mandatory finger food at any celebration. Cachapas, pabellón criollo and corn empanadas are found downtown, in Estación Central, Independencia and almost every commune, with generous home-style portions and hours that start with breakfast.
