History

History of Ski Resorts

Santiago is one of the few capitals in the world where you can ski and be back in the city for lunch. The mountain resorts are forty kilometers from downtown, up the road to Farellones and its famous forty numbered bends.

Farellones was born in 1937 as Chile's first ski resort, driven by the Ski Club Chile. It still works as the mountain village of the group: it's where families stay and where the beginners' schools and the snow activities without skis are found.

Above Farellones open El Colorado and La Parva, and higher up Valle Nevado, opened in 1988 with French capital and conceived from the outset as a high-mountain resort. The three share the same range and together form one of the largest ski areas in South America.

To the north, already in the Valparaíso Region, Portillo is the oldest operating resort on the continent and the only one with the Laguna del Inca at its feet. It's three hours from Santiago via Route 60 and is visited all year round, with or without snow.
