History

History of Barrio Italia

Barrio Italia was born as an area of workshops and homes of Italian workers and artisans in the early 20th century, on the border between Providencia and Ñuñoa.

The old furniture-makers' sheds and restoration workshops gave way to a circuit of antique dealers that, from the 1990s, defined the neighborhood's commercial identity.

Today the mansions are organized into courtyards and inner arcades: Chilean design shops, architecture studios, specialty coffee shops and restaurants occupying the old corridors and gardens.

It is a neighborhood to explore unhurriedly and on foot, wandering in and out of the courtyards. On weekends it concentrates fairs, live music and one of the most varied food scenes in the city.
