History
History of Urban Wine Tourism
The history of Chilean wine begins here. In 1541 Pedro de Valdivia founds Santiago and, years later, brings the first vines from Spain. In 1554 the town council records the existence of «the first vineyard in Chile», owned by Diego García de Cáceres, in what is now Barrio Brasil.
A year later, on the eastern slopes of Cerro Santa Lucía —today's Barrio Lastarria—, the first wine made in the country is recorded, «intended for mass», the work of Rodrigo de Araya: Chile's first winegrower.
During the 16th century the city grew among fenced vineyards. The plots of the founding grid were divided between orchards and vine arbors, and wine was part of everyday life in colonial Santiago long before the wine valleys we associate with wine tourism today existed.
That history is still lived at the tables of downtown and today extends to different municipalities and neighborhoods of Santiago. Restaurants, bars and hotels offer extensive wine lists, wine by the glass, pairings, tastings and experiences designed around wine.
Historical milestones
Wine through time
Five moments that explain why Santiago is the cradle of Chilean wine.
1541 · The first vines
Pedro de Valdivia founds Santiago at the foot of the Huelén and, years later, has the first vines brought from Spain to be planted in the valley.
1554 · Chile's first vineyard
The Cabildo minutes of August 28 record «the first vineyard in Chile», owned by Diego García de Cáceres, in what is now Barrio Brasil.
1555 · Chile's first wine
On the eastern slopes of Cerro Santa Lucía —today's Lastarria— Rodrigo de Araya makes the country's first wine, «intended for mass». He is Chile's first winegrower.
16th century · Santiago grows among vineyards
The plots of the founding grid are divided between orchards and fenced vine arbors. Wine is part of everyday life in colonial Santiago long before the wine valleys exist.
Today · A new way to experience wine
