History

History of Barrio Bellavista

Bellavista was born on the north bank of the Mapocho, on the land between the river and Cerro San Cristóbal. For a long time it was a neighborhood of artisans and workers, with low houses with continuous façades and narrow streets that are still recognizable.

Pío Nono street still marks the border between Recoleta and Providencia: the neighborhood belongs to two municipalities at once, something unusual in Santiago that explains its mix of atmospheres.

In the 1950s Pablo Neruda built La Chascona here, the house he made for Matilde Urrutia on the slopes of the hill. With him and the artists who kept arriving, Bellavista became the city's bohemian neighborhood.

Today it concentrates restaurants, bars, theaters and lapis lazuli workshops, and is the gateway to the Metropolitan Park: the funicular up San Cristóbal leaves from Pío Nono.
