History

History of Rural Wine Tourism

The vine arrived in Chile with the colony, but wine as we know it today begins in the mid-19th century, when the families of Santiago's elite brought French grape varieties and winemakers from Bordeaux to plant them in the Maipo Valley, just outside the city.

From that bet came the wineries that still operate: Cousiño Macul within the urban area, Santa Rita in Alto Jahuel, Concha y Toro in Pirque, Undurraga in Talagante. Their parks, mansions and underground cellars are today architectural heritage as well as working wineries.

In 1994 the identity of carménère was confirmed in Chile, a Bordeaux variety believed extinct since the phylloxera plague that had traveled mistaken for merlot. That discovery gave the country a flagship grape and pushed wine tourism as an industry.

The valleys divide up the styles. The Maipo is cabernet sauvignon country; Casablanca, cooler thanks to the Pacific's influence, was only planted in the 1980s and gives the whites and pinot noir; Colchagua, to the south, concentrates the age-worthy reds and the wine museums.
