History

History of Barrio Brasil

Barrio Brasil began to take shape during Santiago's westward expansion in the late 19th century. In that process, the construction of the Basílica del Salvador in 1864 became a key milestone in the urban, spiritual and social consolidation of the area, commissioned by Archbishop Rafael Valentín Valdivieso from the German architect Teodoro Burchard after the fire at the Iglesia de la Compañía.

Around it, residences, institutions, shops and meeting places settled in, shaping a distinguished neighborhood with a strong architectural identity. Among its first inhabitants were families of the Chilean elite whose fortunes had grown alongside the booming silver and nitrate mines. These families chose the area for their homes and commissioned the design and construction of their mansions from prominent Chilean and foreign architects, who brought to Santiago the currents then prevailing in Europe.

Thus arose elegant homes in neoclassical, neo-Gothic and eclectic styles, with ornate façades, cornices, balconies, stained glass, ironwork and refined interior details. Among the architects, Teodoro Burchard, Josué Smith Solar, Alberto Cruz Montt, Ricardo Larraín Bravo, Alberto Siegel, Alberto Álamos, Gustavo Monckeberg, José Forteza and Ismael Edwards Matte stand out, among others.

With academic training and a strong influence from the European tradition and the Beaux-Arts school, these professionals freely combined neoclassical, neo-Gothic, baroque, art deco and academic elements. The result was an eclectic architecture of great ornamental richness, visible in its continuous façades, cornices, balconies, stained glass, ironwork and elaborate entrances. Despite the diversity of styles, their works built a harmonious urban image that still distinguishes the neighborhood.

Over time, Barrio Brasil gathered diverse architectural and cultural expressions, becoming a testimony to an era of prosperity and to different stages in Santiago's history. Its streets preserve the memory of old families, religious communities, schools, theaters and small businesses that have brought diversity and vitality to the area.

Today the neighborhood keeps that mixed and singular character. It is a heritage territory with outstanding conversions, where architecture, culture, food, university life and community organization coexist. Walking it means discovering a slower, more human Santiago: a neighborhood that acknowledges its history, protects its identity and, at the same time, awaits and plans its renewal to project itself into the future.
