Events, fairs and shows in Barrio República this month.
This is where the month's events, fairs and shows in the neighborhood will go. If you organize activities in Barrio República, add them to the hub and they'll appear in these listings.
In the late 19th century Santiago's wealthy families began leaving the colonial center and moved south of the Alameda. Around Avenida República they built European-inspired mansions with front gardens, iron railings and inner courtyards.
The result was an elite residential neighborhood whose layout remained almost intact. Its architectural value led to much of the area being declared a Typical Zone, which halted the demolition of the mansions while downtown was being rebuilt in height.
As the 20th century went on, the families left and the universities arrived. The mansions became headquarters, faculties and libraries, and the neighborhood turned into the university heart of Santiago: today several institutions share the same 1900s houses.
That dual condition —residential heritage and student life— gives it its current character. By day thousands of students move among century-old façades; the Club Hípico and Parque O'Higgins, steps away, complete the area.
The places you can't miss in Barrio República.
