Patronato concentrates Santiago's Korean community and with it a range of restaurants, grocers and bakeries that supply both the neighborhood and the city. Table grills are the most common way in.
Chile's Korean community formed from the 1970s onward, tied to the textile trade, and concentrated on the same blocks of Patronato that Arab families had occupied before. With it came the ingredient shops, the bakeries and the first restaurants, which for decades cooked almost exclusively for the community itself.
The Korean cultural wave of the last fifteen years —music, series, cosmetics— brought Santiaguinos into those same places. Table grills, kimchi and tteokbokki stopped being a neighborhood secret, and today Patronato works as a small Korean district, with cafés, supermarkets and restaurants open late, steps from Bellavista.
